SPRING 2019 | CELEBRITY CARICATURE

This project intends to display my illustration skills through the medium of caricature. The chosen subject need only be a recognizable celebrity. I first settled on Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as my two subjects. I wanted to illustrate them in the style of their roles in the movie Death Becomes Her, a film known for over-the-top makeup, hair, costume design and somewhat disturbing physical comedy. I quickly realized that although Streep and Hawn would be recognizable subjects on their own, it’s more difficult to recognize them when they sport film accurate hair and makeup. Rather than appealing only to viewers who’d seen Death Becomes Her, I wanted my final piece to be more accessible, and recognizable to a wider audience.

I decided to go back to the drawing board and chose a single subject with unique features and compelling iconography. As one of my guiltiest pleasures is binging old episodes of America’s Next Top Model, I decided that Tyra Banks would be a fabulous celebrity to caricature. She can be easily identified by her killer cheekbones, curvaceous figure, luscious locks, prominent forehead, and signature “smize”.
